Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PHS) is a form of energy storage that utilizes potential energy from two water reservoirs located at different elevations. During times of low energy demand, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the higher reservoir, creating potential energy that can be stored for times of higher demand. When the demand for energy increases, this stored potential energy is converted into kinetic energy as the water flows back down to the lower reservoir, driving a turbine to generate electricity. PHS is a reliable and efficient method of storing energy, and is often used in combination with other forms of energy storage such as flywheel energy storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES), and solid mass gravitational energy storage. The use of multiple forms of energy storage helps to ensure that electricity supply meets demand, while also providing a more reliable and cost-effective solution than traditional hydroelectric power.
